Matthew was a high school cricket prodigy, breaking several of the prestigious Grey High School cricket records. From a young age he caught the eye of national selectors, earning him a spot in the SA U/19 World Cup team for the 2018 event. He made his First Class debut for Eastern Province whilst still at school and has since been a mainstay in the side. Consistent performances have seen him selected for various South African Men's Emerging and 'A' side tours.

Matthew broke onto the international scene in 2023 with his T20 international debut for the Proteas against Australia. He has then gone on to play Test cricket in 2024 and One Day cricket in 2025 for the Proteas. Matthew currently holds the record for the highest score on debut in ODI's. Matthew has played for various 'Franchise' T10 and T20 teams in the SA20, IPL and ILT20 tournaments.
